Q&A with Justin Fletcher
By Tara King
There’s a rumble of excitement in the Kids’ Book Club this week… Justin Fletcher, otherwise known as Mr Tumble, has taken time out of his super-busy schedule to exclusively answer your questions.
From his favourite food to his future plans, read all your questions and answers to television’s most giggle-tastic presenter here.
Q: Galina V
We love Mr Tumble. As a Mum of two sons (one has special needs) I am very grateful to you for creating the most inspired show. Could you give us more insight into the creation of the programme? Does the programme involve any specialists like a child psychologist or a speech therapist? You will always have a very special place in our heart. Thank you for being who you are.
A: Justin Fletcher
Something Special was created about 10 years ago now and it seems to go from strength to strength. I think that’s because it appeals to all young children. I work closely with senior Makaton tutors during filming to make sure the sign language we use is spot on.
Q: Rachel Samuel
Who is your comedy inspiration now and as a child?
A: Justin Fletcher
I have always been a huge fan of Laurel and Hardy. Their slapstick comedy has been a real inspiration to me over the years. I also love watching Jim Carey and David Jason.
Q: Lorraine Cooper
My two-year-old would like to ask what’s your favourite food? She loves sausage, chips and sauce and wonders if you like the same.
A: Justin Fletcher
I certainly do like sausages, but one of my favourite dishes is cauliflower cheese.
Q: Louise
My kids love your book! How do you come up with the jokes?
A: Justin Fletcher
Some jokes I remember from my childhood, others come to me anytime, anywhere. I try to write them down straight away so I don’t forget them. There are plenty of willing volunteers who love to tell me their jokes too!
Q: Lisa Pollitt
Have any programmes you watched as a young boy inspired your character and how does it feel to think that so many youngsters will remember learning with Mr Tumble? Personally I love watching and joining in the songs with the children too.
A: Justin Fletcher
I’ve always loved comedy and I think that has helped me to develop Mr Tumble’s character. Something Special is a wonderful programme and Makaton really has helped lots of children to communicate with their friends and families.
Q: Linda West
My grandchildren love you as I do, but which seaside do you record Mr Tumble? It looks so lovely. Keep up the good work.
A: Justin Fletcher
Something Special is recorded all over the country. Mr Tumble has been to Bournemouth, Porlock and Salcombe. He seems to like being by the sea.
Q: Belinda Sullivan
Are there any plans for a Mr Tumble or Justin’s House roadshow tour? My two boys would love it. They watch every show you do!
A: Justin Fletcher
Yes I am going on tour next year at Easter. It’s called the Justin and Friends Easter Tour 2013. It promises to be lots of fun!
Q: Christopher Jones
Hi Justin, My daughter is five years old and is Mr Tumble crazy. What did you do before you got into television? Do people find you naturally funny?
A: Justin Fletcher
I trained at drama school and I started working on my characters and children’s programme ideas in my third year. When I left I was lucky enough to start work on Fun Song Factory – my first job in children’s television. It is great to be able to make children laugh.
Q: Robin
Fresh from watching Justin's House yesterday with my six-year-old, I'd like to ask what your ambitions are for the future? More children's TV or something different?
A: Justin Fletcher
I am very happy doing what I am doing and hope to continue working in children’s television, but who knows what the future may hold!
Q: Charmian
Hi Justin are you filming a new series of Something Special soon?
A: Justin Fletcher
We are currently working on a new series of Something Special so that one’s in the pipeline already.
Q: Claire
My two-year-old loves Mr Tumble and learning signs, do you have a personal reason for doing the show?
A: Justin Fletcher
When Something Special was first developed I just thought it was a wonderful idea to have a programme that focused on communication for children. I was lucky enough to get the job and have never looked back. The children I work with are an inspiration and I learn something new every day.
Q: Laura
We are big fans of Justin in this house! Both my kids love you and I'd like to know (because I'm nosy) what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: Justin Fletcher
I love being outside. If I get a few hours off I might go fishing with my Dad or walk in the countryside. I have a few pets – including two cats – and they keep me busy!
Justin Fletcher is the BAFTA award-winning television presenter, writer and star of Something Special, Mr Tumble and Gigglebiz - to name just three of his top kids’ shows. We love Justin’s new book My First Justin’s Jokes, available in Tesco now.
